The Noise at Work Regulations requires employers to monitor the noise at work and provide ear defenders where noise is above certain thresholds. This is because exposure to excessive noise levels over a number of years without adequate ear protection can lead to impaired hearing or deafness. Where the ears are exposed to exceptionally high levels of noise damage can occur in a short period of time.

Industries particularly at risk include construction, general factory work on noisy production lines, steel making and metal working. Affected employees may also experience tinnitus either in isolation or alongside hearing loss – an intermittent or constant noise in one or both ears. This can have several consequences including making it difficult to sleep and ensuing psychological problems.
